“It’s really quite something. Now that you’ve experienced a fraction of it, you’ll be prepared for what’s next…”
Two figures walked together alone down a starlit forest path in the cool of late autumn. One, older in robes of orange and red; another younger, long hair and beard a rich black and garbed in robes of purple and silver. As they walked along their hands wove cantrips endlessly, their fingers seeming to multiply as they wound the deftly intricate movements of protection spells. The elder wizard was never safe, and no one was safe near him.
“So you can actually move completely to a…different dimension? As in physically? That sounds impossible. Even with all the magic I’ve seen and done, I’ve never heard of this.”
“Well, if you’d expanded your interests a bit, you’d have run into the practices of the troll shamans of Theb. That’s where I first got the notion. But they don’t use it like this- I’ve taken it much further. Watch.”
The elder wizard spoke a few words and became blurry, almost out of focus. Moments later he was gone, and the younger wizard left alone.
Mere moments more, and the elder wizard returned with a whisk and popping sound, as if he’d been there the whole time.
“So the trick became, though, remembering which reality you were supposed to be a part of. We were spending so much time traveling from one dimension to another, it became harder and harder to remember ‘home’. So I came up with the idea of the Charm. It was quite a challenge to obtain the parts- only elements with a deep magic would work for this. One of the gems set into it, for instance, was seized from a faery village- but that’s a story for another day.
The genius of the Charm is that it anchors us to this reality. Its firmly lodged in the here and now, and visible in any direction, from any distance, through the myriad dimensions of existence. It has no power other than this, and no relevance to anyone else; its quite unique to myself and my familiar, Illus.”
“Could another be made? What if I should intend to walk worlds like this, how do I make my own?”
“I can guide you generally, but now that you bring it up I don’t really know. I put a lot of effort into obtaining the materials to create mine- most of the components themselves are also unique. I expect it would be quite the quest to make your own.”
