Having decided to find a way<\/a> down to the stream, they soon found it not as difficult as it had first appeared. It was treacherous; certainly not a walk someone would take voluntarily. But in terms of survival, they found footholds secure among the slick mossy rocks and soon were standing at the banks of the roiling waters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gazing down the length of the gorge, they could only see so far before it bent. They thought they had a good sense of where they had come from, and assumed that following the stream inland would be best. To this end they made there way along the rugged banks, clambering over boulders and shouldering their way through tough bushes. Night was setting on, and darkness was coming quickly to the steep narrow gorge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, they noticed movement on the rim of the gorge just beyond, around the next bend- riders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the horses came to a stop, it was clear the riders were gazing down at the group. As they stood still, it also became clear, that the horses were long dead, and the moonlight shown straight through their bones. The riders wore dark robes, but it almost seemed bony faces glimmered under the hoods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along either side of the gorge, they stood a moment, illuminated against the fading light of day; then, before anyone could react, each of them turned and with a whirl of robes leaped back from the edge, out of sight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stood still long moments, expecting the riders to leap at them from some unknown avenue; but eventually it became clear- for whatever reason, they had left them alone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

They moved onward, and at length came to more architecture; ancient columns and arches forming remnants of bridges across the gorge. After several ruined ones, they came to a mostly passable span, and tried to make their way<\/a> to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
