At one point<\/a> Lalslan found himself stranded in a tiny solar system at the edge of nowhere. There were only two planets here and a few lonely asteroids, and his warp drive was out of fuel again. He’d been going from planet to planet searching desperately for the vital elements to no avail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One planet, marked Hiyo 62\/A5 on his charts, was frigid to an unholy degree. When he landed in a snowy clearing on a relatively flat patch of rugged mountain, the sky had been clear. It was cold, but manageable. Then a sudden blizzard blew in and his life support strained to maintain equilibrium. He found himself spending all his time hunting down the precious sodium required. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing that was odd about this planet; there were enormous black cubes of what appeared to be standard natural silicate, geometrically perfect as near as he could tell. They yielded no secrets; he tried climbing them, drilling holes in them, nothing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise he found a network of tunnels with promising rock formations, but only gold, silver and cobalt; nothing he could use. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually he roamed further and further, but ended caught in a particularly bad storm and nearly froze to death; after this he returned quickly to his ship and left the horrible place behind. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other planet in the system, marked Eimo Tau, but found this one both hot and radioactive. Really radioactive. In no time at all after leaving his ship, his life support systems were at it again. He found no relief undergound, but did encounter a radioactive storm that again set his support systems to critical. A quick review of a sample site yielded a similar lack of needed elements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was feeling trapped, and there was only one avenue left he could think of- he’d seen a space station<\/a> out there, but had avoided it since he was helpless – his ships guns had never been fixed.
