this is a short series of tracks I made using bandlab’s samples and looper function. Its been years since I used samples or loops in this way, as the majority of my music is live performed. It started with messing around with the app to create silly dance beats, and then turned into a project. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

each track in this project has a set of conditions – only samples, no live 1-to-1 instrumentation. Nearly every sample is adjusted in some way using effects; but occasionally I’ve let a sample in bare, as part of the point of this project is using the samples themselves. The actual music is then constructed through a series of live recordings, overlaying track by track. Lastly, save for a very few rare occasions, samples are at all times being “played” – either effects are being applied and adjusted in real time or the sample is being triggered manually. At no time is the music happening because I just clicked “play”; there is always something being done to manipulate the sounds in realtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve made a series of videos to go along with the tracks; with these I’ve continued the theme and, similar to audio samples, used ai generated images. The images are generated based on my own prompts, and then curated, arranged, or edited as needed. These are then combined and layered with various effects to form moving videos out of still images, a visual analog of the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The result is both fabricated and handmade, blending elements of each into a hybrid creation that pays homage to the machines that helped manifest it, but remains a lively expression of human art. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
